Subject: Toasted K-Flop
Well... after roasting my last KFlop, and KStep I just bought two new ones. First thing I did was hook up 35V to the ISO 5V+ pin. Toasted again.. I think I need a new hobby...

Circuit board repair anyone??  anyone?? Sounds like a new hobby to me..... been watching YouTube on replacing surface mount components.

I saw a small flash of light, but cannot identify which traces or components might be fried.

Tom - are you particularly familiar with the KStep board? Am I needing to throw it away, or could you suggest any components I could try to replace.

Thanks,

Scott

    Scott,

You might only need to replace the three leg regulator just above and to the left of the JR1 power connection point.  I don't have my KFLOP in front of me but if you only connected the 35V to the 5V leg the regulator might have saved your board.  Did you connect anything to the 12V input pin on the JR1 power connector.  I believe the KFLOP uses 3.3V power to power the DSP and Xilinx parts and probably most of the other logic.  I don't have the schematic but Tom can probably tell you for sure.  I don't have a KSTEP but if it was plugged into the KFLOP, I think the 5V comes from the KFLOP, again not positive since I don't have the KSTEP.

    Hi Scott,

Sorry to hear this.  Unfortunately to repair these boards is not cost effective.  Its involved to analyze the problems, obtain replacement parts, repair, test, clean, etc...  Especially with something like this where many components may have been damaged and possibly the pcb itself.

Contact our support and they may offer some discount on a replacement.

    Regards

    TK

      Scott,

The KSTEP has its own connector for 5V power, so depends what you did exactly.  If you had it powered separately you might not have destroyed this board.  You need to explain exactly how you had it wired to determine the damage.
